The Olden Days and Growing Up

Cassie went to her first formal dance last weekend. She looked absolutely beautiful and had a fantastic time. Times are sure different, though. When I went to a dance, my mom often sewed or rigged my dress, my cousin did my hair, and I painted my nails if they weren't all chipped off from playing the piano. Cassie and I went to the mall and found her dress for a great deal, if I do say so myself, and it only took going back and forth between two stores three times to make a final decision. The Monday before, we went to Sun Valley so Uncle Jared could file and polish her teeth and fit her for a bleaching tray (angling for favorite uncle status, hee hee. Thanks, Jared! We love you!). The day of, she paid to have her hair done at a salon even though I had offered to do it for her. I'm pretty sure I could have curled it like the hairdresser did, but she didn't believe I could, I guess. The funny thing was that while she was getting curled, it literally poured in sheets of rain. I was shopping across the street, and Shaina called me to ask me to go to Target and buy an umbrella so Cassie's hair wouldn't be ruined going from the salon to the truck. I probably could have figured something else out, but I was wet and tired, so I just went to Target and got the dang umbrella.

I went across the street and tried to open the umbrella to get me and my wet clothes into the salon (didn't really need to bother), and guess what? It was broken! It shot straight up when I pushed the button, but it wouldn't open, and it had a hole in the top. LAME! Of course, Cassie was in a hurry to get home and change before her date picked her up in thirty minutes, so Shaina and her friend Rily forcibly stretched the dumb umbrella out enough that they could stand on either side and hold it over Cassie's head while she made it to the truck. They then handed me the wet thing, and I trudged back to Target to get a refund. The funny thing was me, standing there sopping wet and dripping, plopping a broken umbrella down on the customer service counter. The customer service gal couldn't even meet my eyes. Uh, sorry, was about all she had to say.

I made it home just in time to see Brent taking pictures of Cassie and Jeff and to say good-bye as they walked out the door. Ah. Yet another event in my children's lives that makes me realize that the days with my children home to enjoy are numbered. I loved the talks in general conference today about finding joy in the now. Looking back, I never thought I would miss the dirty hands on everything, the crying in the night, everything that goes with having a house full of little ones. I do. While having older children has its perks, and my teenagers are great kids, on weekends when I see my beautiful little girl in a grown-up dress walking out the door with a young man, or when my son comes home to visit from college for the first time, I realize that I didn't enjoy my time with them as little ones as fully as I could have. Oh well. Look forward, as Pres. Monson said, don't look back. Enjoy the now. I will.
It seems like just yesterday that I was going to high school dances; although, looking at pictures like this, it doesn't look like yesterday, does it? (My first formal dance --Sweetheart's Ball 1983)

Oh my gosh! I love how you posted your dance picture, that is really cool. I know I did love the message of finding joy in the journey. It really did hit home, and so I'll take your advice to savor every moment just a little bit more...Cassie looks adorable, she is such a cute girl! And though her hair does look great, I'm with you, I think you could have done it just as well. I'd love to know who that author was, let me know we you get a chance. Take care! Love you guys!

I remember spending the day at home getting ready for the big night. Now there are activities and appointments all day. Truthfully, I did a double take when I scrolled down and saw your dance picture. It looked just like one of mine. Same dress, same hair, same, same. I am glad that Cassie had a good time. She does look beautiful but she looks beautiful in jeans and a T-shirt.

Wow! Our Cassie Bones is growing up. Yes, I agree with everyone else, she does look beautiful.

I remember the dress you have on. It looks pretty great if I do say so myself. I think that it is still hanging in some closet.

YOur blog is great!

Cassie looks great. I can't belive she is old enough to be going to a dance. I think you could have done her hair, and it would have looked just as good.
I am trying to enjoy the moments with Derrick and the kids. Sometimes it is easier saud than done. I will just keep working at it. Love ya, Cork

Wow, Cassie looked unbelievable! So you got married when you were how old??? Yeah, you don't have much time with her:)

And I can't wait to post a picture of me in the mermaid's dress I bought from your mom when I was in highschool. I think that might date you a little...since I'm pretty sure you went to San Fran to pick out the dress I was going to wear in 11th grade and you were married with 2 kids at the time. He he

Cassie's teeth look awesome. Is that David Boren? I can't believe I still remember that, I was only 2 years old. Man that was a long time ago. Did you have to change my diaper before or after the dance?

JeNeale, I know Brent took the pictures before the dance but did he to under cover and hide in the bushes to get the picture when her date brought her home....Just wondering. Holden has been so elusive. I am enjoying my little girls at there sweet little pre-teen ages. As much as I agree with President Monsons advise to enjoy the now, I fear my girls becoming teenagers. Wy cant they all be as perfect as you were when you were young...wait, I might be thinking of a differnt sister in law. Ya, scratch that last statement. I could always compair them to me when I was a teen, perfect in every way....yes, The Olden Days! Love ya! Todd

Hmmmm....Jared, Back off. I'm not there, and I can't offer bleaching trays. Just you wait. Some day...

So anyway. Hi Nealy-O. Been a while for me. I know, I know...I don't blog, I don't text. I still adore you and your family, and I can't stand that I'm not there to enjoy all of these momentous occasions. I think you should have made Cassandra wear your old dress to her first formal. Maybe it would discourage the boys a little. I'm really glad that you dated Dave Boren though. He had the first Macintosh computer I ever worked on. It might be the reason I took up design as a profession.

She looks beautiful, you look beautiful. I am really grateful you are part of my life
